During his lifetime, Chauncey Jerome became better known around the world than any American clock manufacturer of his day. Through ingenuity Jerome built a clock making concern that by 1850 was annually producing more than half the clocks being made in the entire United States. Six year thereafter his empire crumbled under financial strain, leaving him penniless. Eight years before his death in 1868, Jerome published an autobiography, intertwined with a history of the American clock making business. Thought some scholars largely discounted Jerome's writings as the whining of a broken man, my research has convinced me his history is accurate in most details and presents an important view of the industry by a man who was personally involved for more than 60 years - from the introduction of the pillar & scroll clock in 1816 to the end of the Civil War.
