Published in 1998, with a year 2000, 120-page hardcover supplement, Gilbert Clocks by Tran Duy Ly is the definitive work on this renown clock manufacturer. The bulk of the book is comprised of 29 sections covering advertising, alarm, automobile, banjo, calendar, chime, crystal regulators, figure, handing, instand, jewel cased, leather cased, longcase, and a plethora of novelty clocks, plus a section on statuettes and side pieces. Porcelain clock collectors will delight in the significant number of pages devoted to these wonderful clocks. These 37 pages comprise one of the largest and best displays of porcelain clocks in any book. Collectors of Ansonia and other porcelain clocks may find imported porcelain cases used by Gilbert that were also used by other firms but which are not shown in the catalogs of these companies. Tran Duy Ly introduces his book through his "Important Tips" and shares his invaluable experience on clock appraisement and acquisition. A history of William Gilbert and His Clockmaking Firms is provided by Chris Bailey. With the death of William Gilbert in 1890, there came to a close a career of 62 years in the clockmaking business. Started in 1828, Gilbert enjoyed a longer clockmaking career than any of his associates, Chauncey Jerome, Eli Terry, Seth Thomas, Joseph Ives, Irenus Atkins, Elias Ingraham. He outlived them all. His firm, The William L. Gilbert Clock Company, continued to make clocks for 74 more years after his passing. Gilbert Clocks and Gilbert Clocks Supplement Including 2000 Price Up-Date by Tran Duy Ly are both Smyth-sewn hard covers on white gloss enamel text. Very nice quality. 668 pages with the supplement.
