Tran Duy Ly's Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements has been regarded as the best singular company clock book every published. Until now the most recent edition was published in 1996 and has been long out-of-print. The few used copies that made it to the market has demanded astronomical prices as the information contained in this book is near priceless for the dealer and collector. The new 3rd edition is much improved over earlier editions.
Volume one is a whopping 576 pages with Arlington Books typical high quality paper and smyth sewn hardcover binding. Tran Duy Ly s important tips, a well-written history of the company by Chris Bailey, a chronology and an important section on dating on Seth Thomas clocks lead off the book. The bulk of Volume 1 consists of Seth Thomas clocks. Alarm clocks, automobile clocks, banjo clocks, calendar clocks, carriage clocks, chime clocks, city clocks, cottage clocks, crystal regulators, hanging clocks, longcase clocks and standing regulators, and mantel clocks including Adamantine, cabinet, cabinet electric, desk, iron and leather mantel clocks.
Volume 2 is in four Parts. The first part is a continuation of Part II from book one. This section continues the presentation of Seth Thomas Clocks starting with mantel clocks of various types, e.g. marble, onyx, metal novelty, ogee, pillar and scroll, tambour, and many others. From there, the book moves into Ship Bell Clocks, Ship Chronometer and Levers, Statuettes and Candlesticks, Street Clocks, Tower Clocks, Watches and Wrist Watches.
Part III is the invaluable movements section. The section starts with a cross reference that lists the clocks of Part II and the movements used. Movement diagrams, descriptions and illustrations follow as do dial descriptions and illustrations.
Parts IV and V present Plymouth Clocks and clocks, gas fixtures and ornaments from Seth Thomas & Sons Clocks.
