The Historical Society of Berks County presents this comprehensive study of Berks Country Tall-Case Clocks, 1750 - 1850, as one part of an extensive clock research and documentation project. These tall-case clocks were all crafted and assembled in Berks Country from 1750 until 1850. They continue to be treasured as both practical time-keeping instrments and objects of great aesthetic appeal. More than fifty clock makers worked within Berks Conty during the inteval embraced by this work.
Each clock possesses the character one would expect from the era of hand craftsmanship. Although all of them are commonly referred to as grandfather clocks, they embrace several distinct styles and are made from a variety of material. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Winterthur, and the Yales University Art Gallery are among cultural institutions of international stature which own Berks Country tall-case clocks.
